Shapiro Budget Would Lead to Tax Increases, Roae Says

February 4, 2025

HARRISBURG — Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford/Erie) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s 2025-26 budget proposal:

“The governor’s budget proposal, if enacted, would spend the rest of the Commonwealth’s General Fund surplus and make a dent in the Rainy Day Fund, which would result in a huge tax increase in future years. Once spending is increased on a particular line item, it is very difficult to decrease it.

“We should be focused on cutting and efficiencies, not spending willy-nilly. The governor is also playing a shell game. His proposal would significantly increase the portion of the sales tax that goes to mass transit, which benefits Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, while leaving rural communities high and dry. He is also eliminating four specific tax credit programs, which encourage economic growth in specific areas, while creating a new tax credit that claims to encourage employment-related economic development without providing specific details.”
