Grants Awarded to Area Historical Projects, Roae Says

June 5, 2025

HARRISBURG — Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford/Erie) today announced almost $150,000 in Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission grants were awarded to the city of Meadville and the Erie County Historical Society.

Keystone Historic Preservation Construction grants, funded by the Commonwealth’s Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund, support small construction projects to rehabilitate, restore or preserve publicly accessible historic resources listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

“Both of these grants will support historic structures,” Roae said. “It is important they are properly maintained and preserved.”

The city of Meadville received $44,000 to leverage locally raised donations to replace all four sets of exterior doors at the Meadville Market House. These new doors will be more historically accurate than the current doors, while also increasing the building’s safety, security and energy efficiency. The Meadville Market House is Pennsylvania’s oldest continuously operating market structure, offering local produce, eggs, baked goods, meat and artisan wares to Crawford County residents since 1870.

Erie County Historical Society was awarded $100,000 to repair the historic Watson-Curtze Mansion’s 96 wood windows. The mansion was built in 1891, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and used as a history museum. The windows are original to the mansion. The wood windows need to be repaired and painted to protect them from further deterioration, reduce air infiltration and preserve the historic mansion in its original form.

The 6th Legislative District includes the city of Meadville; Beaver, Conneaut, East Fairfield, East Fallowfield, East Mead, Fairfield, Greenwood, Hayfield, North Shenango, Pine, Randolph, Sadsbury, South Shenango, Spring, Summerhill, Summit, Union, Vernon, Wayne, West Fallowfield, West Mead and West Shenango townships; and Cochranton, Conneaut Lake, Conneautville, Linesville and Springboro boroughs in Crawford County and Conneaut, Elk Creek and Springfield townships and Albion and Cranesville boroughs in Erie County.
